Dental amalgam is the silver-coloured filling that most of us are familiar with. Even though there is mercury in dental amalgam, once it is combined with the other materials in the amalgam filling its chemical nature is changed meaning it is harmless.
No trustworthy controlled studies have found any connections between amalgam fillings and any medical problem, and so we do still offer them.
Although composite (white- coloured) fillings are becoming more popular, amalgam fillings are still one of the most durable and long-lasting form of filling available.
They are cheaper than white fillings as they take less time to place, and hence provide a good option if you are watching the pennies and not too worried about the appearance of the filling.
